(Washington, DC) - BALAREZO LAW is pleased to announce that it has been retained as lead trial counsel for Joaquin “el Chapo” Guzman.  Mr. Guzman is currently pending trial in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn, where he is charged with narcotics trafficking offenses in a 17-count indictment.  Trial is scheduled to begin April 16, 2018, and is expected to last approximately three to four months.

(Washington, DC) - The Washington Post quoted Mr. Balarezo in an article concerning a client whose case was impacted by the alleged evidence tampering of an FBI agent.  Mr. Balarezo was able to withdraw the client’s prior plea to 9-11 years (under another attorney who previously represented the client) and successfully negotiated a much favorable plea resulting in a sentence of 6 years.

(Washington, DC) - Mr. Balarezo appeared today on Colombia’s “Noticias Caracol” for an interview concerning the botched extradition of an innocent carpenter from Colombia.  Based on information provided by a confidential informant, the United States sought the carpenter’s extradition for money laundering.  Relying on the United State’s “evidence,” the Colombian Supreme Court and President approved the extradition.  The United States later withdrew the request citing an unspecified “error.”

(Washington, DC) - Mr. Balarezo represented Antoine Jones at his initial trial and retrial, where Mr. Balarezo challenged the government’s use of a warrantless GPS tracking device to follow Mr. Jones’ movements 24 hours a day for a month.  The trial court denied Mr. Balarezo’s motion and ruled that the government did not need a warrant.  The GPS evidence was a significant factor in Mr. Jones’ conviction.  However, The Supreme Court of the United States in United States v. Jones unanimously ruled that the warrantless use of GPS devices to track suspects is unconstitutional.

(Washington, DC) - The Washington Times quoted Mr. Balarezo in an article concerning the dismissal of attempted murder charges against his client stemming from a triple shooting at popular D.C. nightclub.  Mr. Balarezo was the fifth and final attorney to represent the defendant during the more than four years he was detained pending trial.  Mr. Balarezo's trial preparation and investigation revealed that government eyewitnesses' identification of client were not credible and extremely weak.  

(Washington, DC) - The Washington Times quoted Mr. Balarezo concerning the acquittal of his client, who had been charged with participating in a Colombian drug trafficking organization, believed to be responsible for transporting more than 15 tons of cocaine per month from Colombia to the United States and Europe.
