August 8, 2017 (Washington, DC) - BALAREZO LAW is pleased to announce that it has been retained as lead trial counsel for Joaquin “el Chapo” Guzman. Mr. Guzman is currently pending trial in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn, where he is charged with narcotics trafficking offenses in a 17-count indictment. Trial is scheduled to begin April 16, 2018, and is expected to last approximately three to four months.
According to A. Eduardo Balarezo, BALAREZO LAW’s founder, “We are prepared to defend Mr. Guzman to the fullest extent possible to ensure that his rights are protected and that he is not steamrolled by the government and its endless train of cooperators. March 4, 2016 (Baltimore, MD) - A federal judge today sentenced Mr. Balarezo’s client to a term of 48 months in prison. Mr. Balarezo previously tried the case to a jury, which was unable to reach a verdict. After the mistrial, Mr. Balarezo successfully negotiated a binding plea to the 48 month term even though the Federal Sentencing Guidelines called for a term of 151 - 188 months.

September 12, 2014 (Washington, DC) - Mr. Balarezo appeared today on Colombia’s “Noticias Caracol” for an interview concerning the botched extradition of an innocent carpenter from Colombia. Based on information provided by a confidential informant, the United States sought the carpenter’s extradition for money laundering. Relying on the United State’s “evidence,” the Colombian Supreme Court and President approved the extradition. The United States later withdrew the request citing an unspecified “error.”

September 8, 2014 (Washington, DC) - Chief Judge Roberts and the District Judges of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia selected Mr. Balarezo to serve on the Merit Selection Panel that will assist the Court in filling a magistrate judge vacancy. Mr. Balarezo is honored and privileged to serve.
July 29, 2014 (Washington, DC) - The United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit today vacated the conviction of Lonnell Glover (No. 10-3075) because the District Court admitted evidence at trial obtained pursuant to a facially insufficient warrant. Mr. Balarezo represented Glover in a federal PCP conspiracy case in which Mr. Balarezo challenged the validity of a “truck bug,” a listening device installed on Glover’s truck. In addition to Fourth Amendment grounds, Mr. Balarezo challenged the truck bug on Fed. R. Crim. P. 41 grounds — that the judge had authorized placement of the bug outside her jurisdiction. The trial judge denied the motion and Glover was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. As a result of the violation, the Court of Appeals vacated Glover’s conviction and remanded the case to the District Court.
